USA Today Ponder Joss Whedon’s Next Project

Joss Whedon’s next project? Probably not ‘Wonder Woman’ or ‘Star Wars’

Joss Whedon

Avengers: Age of Ultron is about to hit theaters – and most likely rule the summer-movie season – but one guy who’s about to take it easy is director Joss Whedon. Pencils are down, test is turned in, even had a premiere. So now we have to start thinking of what’s next for the geek god – and iconic innovator – who’s given us Buffy, Firefly and neato little Shakespeare projects filmed at his house on the cheap.

The one thing we know for sure – he’s done with Avengers for the time being, since the Russo brothers are signed up to tackle the next two movies comprising Avengers: Infinity Way. But he told us he’s now averse to going back to superheroes one day.

“I’ve been making superhero movies my whole career. That’s basically what everything boils down to. It’s not shocking since I read so many of them. I grew up on comics and everything I do has a lot of that aspect.”

What else could he do?

‘STAR WARS: EPISODE IX’!”

J.J. Abrams is doing The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson signed on for Episode VIII and who wouldn’t want to see The Millenium Falcon flying around in a Whedon-directed ninth Star Wars movie to finish out a new trilogy?

He says he’d at least consider it if asked.

“I don’t think you not think about it. My feeling is there are so many restrictions and so many guidelines for an Avengers movie of a Star Wars movie or any of these things I love. There was a time when that would have been my greatest ambition, and I would like to have an ambition that is greater and involves something smaller.”

‘WONDER WOMAN’

Michelle MacLaren just left the movie this week due to creative differences, and even though Warner Bros. seems to want a female filmmaker, a Whedon version of DC Comics’ top superheroine would get nerds of all genders excited. (Not to mention he pretty much wrote a Wonder Woman script that’s sitting on a shelf somewhere.)

While a Marvel-to-DC switch would be tantamount to Yankee icon Derek Jeter coming out of retirement to play for the hated Red Sox, a Wonder flick also wouldn’t quite fit in with the whole “something smaller” motif.

“You know, it sounds very entertaining. And it would be very fun to lock in that very different aesthetic, play those rhythms, see how I did. But the fact of the matter is, I’m sure that’s going up right away. And I’m not doing anything for a little while – I’ve gotta do something new.”

As it turns out the correct answer is…

HE HAS NO CLUE!

“Literally no idea. I’m not being coy. I usually am dreaming up the next idea while I’m procrastinating on whatever I’m doing. I couldn’t do that this time. Every piece of creativity I had went right back into Ultron. Now I’m looking at a completely blank page and actually it’s a long time since I’ve done that so I’m pretty excited.”
