SyfyWire Interview: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cast

WATCH: AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. CAST ON NEW CHARACTER DEKE

While we do know that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be blasted off into space in Season 5, one emerging character who has been hanging around in the dar so far is Deke – until SYFY WIRE got to shed some light on the mystery man in an exclusive interview.

Chloe Bennet, who plays resident hacktivist and earthquake-starting Inhuman Daisy Johnson, admits that there is something of a “hate-hate relationship” between her character and Deke, opinionated individuals who “immediately butt heads.” Of course, it just has to happen that the person who you’d rather throw off the spaceship is the one you need the most. Deke is the Agents’ gateway to the new environment they’re so abruptly thrown into. He is also pretty much guaranteed (unlike some other extraterrestrial beings) not to eat them alive.

With the Agents needing to operate as a team that now includes the disagreeable Deke, they may find themselves in peril when all moving parts of that team don’t exactly function to well together/

“I think Daisy and Deke see a bit of themselves in each other, and that can be extremely helpful or it can be extremely aggravating,” said Jeff Eard, who plays the hard-headed hero. Remember that the rest of the team seems to have suddenly materialized in Deke’s home, which Ward feels is an exciting change of pace for the characters, but at the same time, a catalyst for friction.

“They’re now in an environment where they don’t have all the information and I do [because] this is where I’m from,” Ward said. “So, it’s interesting to see how all those things are going to unfold.”

Interesting, as in, you should probably expect extragalactic drama bordering on hilarious. You know those moments in Agents where humour is delivered in all dead seriousness.

Clark Gregg, aka Phil Coulson, admitted that one of his favorite things about doing the show is the people the Agents encounter on different adventures. Deke is just one of them. Gregg nearly unearthed major spoilers but stopped himself short at saying there would be others on this season’s journey and not all of them would necessarily side with his team. That alien creeping through the hallways of the ship obviously doesn’t.

Season 5 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. blasts off into space on December 1 on ABC.
