The Buffyverse and Beyond

Today, Buffy the Vampire Slayer turns 25. This means two things. One, I am officially old, and two, this is a ripe time to look back at the legacy of this cult show. Twenty-five years on, Buffy is much more than disgraced show-runners (more on which later) or even the resurgence of its distinctive nineties fashion. This is a show which utterly redefined the way we view female-led drama and foregrounded a feminism which was remarkably nuanced and subtly game-changing.

When “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” premiered in the spring of 1997 as a midseason replacement on a fledgling network with a talking frog as its mascot, few predicted it would make it to a season two, let alone seven seasons and 144 episodes. Certainly even fewer predicted that it would become the cultural phenomenon that it is today, with a still-beating heart 25 years later. And yet!

If you’ve never watched the entire masterful series of Buff the Vampire Slayer, which turns 25 today, you’re seriously missing out. Not only do we have Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) kicking some serious vampire butt, but the high school teenager – who’s mysteriously gifted with superhuman strength to fight the undead – does so in style. She’ll drive stakes through the hearts of her fanged enemies while wearing badass leather pants, sleek camis, and butt-kicking angle boots. As each of the seven seasons progress, Buffy’s heroic fashion only gets better, thanks t costume designer Cynthia Bergstrom. More than two decades later, we still see outfits that feel totally Buffy, both on the runaways and street style stars.

“9-1-1: Lone Star” has already featured guest appearance by to “Angel” alums, Julie Benz and Amy Acker, during the first few episodes of its currently airing third season. And if showrunner Tim Minear – who was a writer and executive producer on “Angel” and brought in Gina Torres, a vet of the WB series, as a lead on “Lone Star” at the start of Season 2 – is down for it, an actress from one of Minear’s other beloved series would love to make another reunion happen: “Firefly” star Morena Baccarin.

Now streaming on Apple TV+, Suspicion is a new thriller series that follows five British citizens who find themselves at the center of a kidnapping investigation when an American businesswoman’s son goes missing. The group embarks on a mission to prove their innocence while avoiding the authorities. Among the ensemble cast are Kunal Nayyar, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Tom Rhys Harries.

The trio of actors spoke to Screen Rant to discuss the twists and turns of the show, common questions they face from fans, and much more.

Apple TV+ original crime thriller series Suspicion follows five ordinary Brits who are accused of being involved in kidnapping the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Uma Thurman), after its discovered that they w ere all in the same New York hotel on the night that it happened. As they try to prove their innocence and secrets start to be uncovered, they also start to suspect each other.

During this 1-on-1 interview with Collider, which you can both watch and read, Elizabeth Henstridge (who plays Tara McAllister, a university lecturer and mom that’s also one of the suspects) talked about why she was attracted to this suspenseful thriller, her one rule for auditioning, whether she gets nervous when starting a new project, the mother-daughter relationship, when she found out how the season would end, and feeling like they earned the ending.

Maybe it’s time to admit we’ve punished Fox enough or only airing 11 episodes of Joss Whedon’s essential sci-fi epic in the wrong order, in its notorious 9 p.m. Friday timeslot of doom, before pulling the plug, Things worked out okay for “https://www.looper.com/759625/the-entire-firefly-timeline-explained/Firefly,” as the cast pretty much prospered tremendously, and we got a movie out of the deal in the form of 2005’s “Serenity.”

Plus, since there’s no way to know if “Firefly” would maintain its quality over the course of multiple seasons, perhaps the premature cancellation wasn’t the worst thing that could’ve happened to the show’s legacy?

Ultimately, all the emphasis on the business aspect of “Firefly” tends to distract from its vision of humanity’s future and many indelible characters. Lets forget about ratings and box office totals for a little bit and hash out the timeline of the “Firefly” ‘Verse. With all due respect to “Firefly” comics, we;re only including the television series and the movie in this post.
