BIO

James grew up in Ryedal, North Yorkshire with his parents (both teachers) and sister, where he attended Ampleforth College.

His interest in acting started at an early age, when he played Joseph in his school nativity play at the age of five. As a child, James would write plays and coerce his school friends into performing them at his house in front of their parents. After leaving college, he undertook some work experience at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.

Before enrolling in RADA, he first studied theology at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam College and was a member of the Marlowe Society Theatre Club. James graduated with a First Class Honours degree and and received a Fitzwilliam Travel Grant to visit Northern India to teach and perform for schoolchildren. Here he developed an interest in Buddhism.

On returning from his travels, James enrolled in RADA where he studied for three years before landing his on screen role alongside future The Nevers co-star Olivia Williams with a small part in An Education in 2009.

Since this time, James has worked consistently with starring roles in series such as Death Comes To Pemberley, War & Peace, Happy Valley, and most recently, Grantchester he has also appeared in Black Mirror.

As well as The Nevers, James can be seen in an upcoming production of Little Women and TV Mini-Series, The Trial of Christine Keeler.

TRIVIA

James first on screen acting role was in “An Education”, which also starred Olivia Williams. Olivia plays Lavinia Bidlow in The Nevers. James’ mother was also called Lavinia.
