James Norton (The Nevers) will return to reprise his role as Tommy Lee Royce in the long-awaited season 3 of BBC drama, Happy Valley. Season 3 will pick up the story 7 years after the end of season 2 and will start with the discovery of the remains of a murder victim that leads Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) back to Tommy.
Speaking of the his return to the role James said “To take on Tommy one final time is a wonderful and daunting privilege, and something I’ve been looking forward to since we wrapped the last series, 6 years ago.”
Creator and writer Sally Wainwright explained the delay between season 2 and 3 as follows: “The plan was to wait for Ryan (Cawood’s grandson, fathered by Tommy after he raped her daughter) to be older so that he can make his own choices and about whether he wants to have contact with his dad or not. So it really explores that. He’s someone who’s trying to make sense of his past and find out the truth about his past. And you know, it’s so complex. And it’s so complex for the adults in his life to try and explain things to him without it being too distressing for him. So it’s kind of all the complexities of that really.”
Filming on season 3 began in January 2022. It is not yet known when it will be aired.
