Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire’ book review

The full length title of this book is actually Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire: A Magickal History of Sunnydale, which is about as accurate as you’re going to get. The book is “written” by Willow and is structured to be part diary, part historical text, part spellbook.

You’ll find journal entries from Willow chronicling the major events of all seven seasons of Buffy (beware of spoilers!), which coincide with pages detailing some of the biggest baddies the Scoobies have come up against. You’ll find information on who they fought, what was going on in their lives during that time, and the spells they used to defeat their enemies, which include ingredients lists, directions, helpful tips, and sometimes even diagrams.

The Official Grimoire is a must-have for any major Buffy fan. It’ll help you relive the series one spell at a time while also giving you an up close and personal look at what sort of magic Willow and the others have done over the years.

Cover to cover, this book is a treasure trove of detail. The front cover has beautiful gold detail with little references woven throughout the filigree. If you look closely at the image above, you’ll spot Mr. Pointy, Buffy’s scythe, a “B” in the show’s famous title script, and more. And that’s only the beginning.

Opening up to the end paper, you’ll see little pen drawings, like Willow had gotten bored during one of Giles’ lectures and started doodling. And it doesn’t stop there. This is Willow’s “personal and confidential” grimoire, and in a letter on the first page, she talks about how she never intended this book to be seen by anyone other than her. However, in 2003 (the final season), they were about to face their biggest challenge yet, and she thought it would be best to give her spellbook an update and share her knowledge with anyone who might need it.

The pages are filled to the brim with information and drawings, starting with the absolute basics, like what household items can aid you in your casting. The images are mostly simple and in black and white, but splashed of color make certain pages standout. Every once in a while you’ll also find something extra – a piece of paper or a card stuck to the page, something tangible that makes this whole book feel all that more real.

But what really makes The Official Grimoire come alive are the little notes scattered throughout the book from all our favorite characters, including Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Dawn, Spike, and Anya. Sometimes it’ll be a helpful addition to Willow’s entry, and other times it’ll be a sequence of back-and-forth squabbling, the kind we saw over the years in the show.

At about 150 pages, there’s no way Willow (or the actual author, A.M. Robinson) would have been able to fit everything in here from all seven seasons of the show, but there’s enough to aid you in walking down memory lane and reliving some of your favorite moments from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s well worth the $35 this grimoire costs to have it in your collection of memorabilia.
