Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 5 episode 15 review: Rise and Shine.

This week’s Agents of SHIELD dives deep into the last 30 or so years of Hydra. It’s surprisingly more interesting than you’d imagine! But what does it all mean? And how does SHIELD fit into it all?
Not-So-Short Summary
Not even a minute into this episode and Hale confirms Hydra is back. 28 years ago, we get a glimpse of General Hale in the Hydra academy, something we’ve never seen before. There’s even a fun Easter egg with a young version of Sitwell.
Oooh, and Daniel Whitehall! Remember him from season two? He gives a presentation on basically the creation of Carl Creel. Agents of SHIELD gives us yet another fun look at a young Baron von Strucker. It actually feels kind of good when Hale punches Strucker in the face.
Apparently it’s a rite of passage in Hydra to kill your own pets, too. Ugh. They don’t gain any points either when Whitehall recruits Hale solely for her reproductive organs.
Two years ago, Ruby and Hale seemed to get along quite well. In a rush, Hale also finds out that after the Chitauri invasion in 2012, Hydra found a transceiver aming the wreckage… and someone responded. The Confederation.
Six months ago, we see Talbot in recovery. He’s doing okay but still has lapses. Hale gets him transferred to the Hydra school facility. There’s a war coming and she needs him to tell her where all of the Hydra contraband is.
One day ago, Coulson gets to see what Hale’s really up to. The mystery member of the Confederation shows Coulson what’s on the way. “So you want my help to arm alien warlords?” Coulson warns, as if he’s seen it firsthand. But while they’re on the same side for all of two minutes, he freaks out the moment she says “Destroyer of Worlds” ans she refuses to believe his “traveled to the future” story.
Post-Credits Stinger
Simmons brings Fitz some tea. She brings Fitz one of his tools, the exact same tool belongs to Deke. Who got it from his grandfather. “But… he’s the worst,” Fitz says.
Badass Moment of the Week
Not a lot to choose from this week, but Daisy quaking Fitz against the wall felt a little cathartic after last week’s torture.
Best One-Liner
“I still outrank you,” Talbot says to the box of Cap’n Crunch. “CrossFit Tinkerbell” is a close second.4
It’s really nice to see General Talbot back on-screen. He’s always been a fun character, and even with his injury, he’s still enjoyable to watch. Also kudos to him for knowing it wasn’t actually Daisy who shot him.
Apparently it’s a new Hydra tradition for people to stumble out of their rooms, find the continental breakfast, and encounter Ruby, who ignores them. Coulson’s the only one who actually gets a different response out of her.
I didn’t mention anything about the last section of the episode that takes us to our SHIELD team. Not much comes of it – Daisy’s after Robin because they need a fortune-teller, Fitz is locked up, and Simmons has successfully given Elena new arms. I’ll stop harping on how that wouldn’t be a thing in real life.
Next week’s Agents of SHIELD shows everyone struggling with what they’re facing. Plus now everything thinks they’re invincible. This will be fun!
