Angel Magazine – March 2005 Issue: David Boreanaz Interview

David admits that some scenes were difficult to film for various reasons – but on Season Five episode was difficult for a very unusual reason. “Oh God. ‘Smile Time’. That’s when I thought they were really at the mushroom stage. I honestly thought it was quite a laugh because I think we had just done the submarine episode, the episode where we go back in time, and they’re like, “Well we’re doing a puppet episode, and Ben [Edlund’s] directing it and we’re [screwed]! But it was cool. I kind of had my hesitations, but then I knew that Ben did The Tick, and I loved that show. It was a great doll and it worked out well. We had a great time because everyone was cracking up during rehearsals. It was very hard, very difficult for the other actors to keep a straight face. But then again, working with Andy Hallet is like working with a puppet too!”
One of David’s favourite aspects of paying Angel was playing the character’s evil alter ego: Angelus. “I thought he was great to play, and I think I would have liked to play him a little bit more,” confesses David.

“I found a fine line with him that I could use even when I was playing Angel, that I cold kind of bring him out in certain situations. But it’s good to put some boots on and get wicked. It’s nice.
And where does such a nice guy like David get the inspiration to pay a nasty character such as Angelus? “A lot of it comes from watching other performances, or I get inspired by listening to certain types of music, or wearing different types of clothing. I guess it depends on how I might be feeling that day. There’s not really any kind of objective as far as where I’m going to go with it or how it’s going to come out. I try to have a loose plan of attack with it. I just kind of let go and the magic happens.”

No one knows whether David has left Angel – and Angelus – behind for good, but one thing’s for certain: he’s getting plenty of acting work! “I finished Angel in April and I started on movie called Mr Fixit, which is a romantic comedy. I play a guy who other guys come to – when they get dumped – to fix it! I basically find girls and befriend them. I become the epitome of the guy and prove that they weren’t that bad after all. So there’s a lot of different types of characters that I’m playing there. I just liked the script and was going to have fun with it. It pretty much had everything I wanted as far as the story – a director, the cast and creating a character that would drive go-karts, dance the mambo and have a blast.
“Then,” he continues, “I did a film called Hard Easy. It’s a diamond heist film that goes awry. I play a trader on an inside job and I get involved in getting money back for screwing people out of fake bonds. There are two teams gong in for the same set of diamonds, it was just fantastic.
“And now I’m working in “These Girls, and it’s a totally

“I THOUGHT [ANGELUS] WAS GREAT TO PLAY, AND I THINK I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO PLAY HIM A LITTLE BIT MORE. IT’S GOOD TO PUT SOME BOOTS ON AND GET WICKED. IT’S NICE.”
