James is from a religious background, his father was a minister, and his mother almost became a nun. He attended Davis High School and went on to attend Julliard, the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts and the American Conservatory Theatre. For ten years his work was mainly in theatre both acting and producing, he performed in New York, Chicago and Seattle. James eventually made the move to LA to pursue his career in TV and film and got his break with a small role in an episode of Northern Exposure. He made such a good impression that they brought him back as a different character for another episode the next year.
James landed his role as Spike in Buffy in its second season and was supposed to be killed off, however, he was such a hit with the fans and the show’s producers that he was brought back briefly in season three and then as a regular until the series’ end when he went on to co-star in the spin-off series Angel.
Since Angel finished, James has spent time recording his own solo album, touring and appearing at conventions. James has continued to work in genre television, portraying Braniac in Smallville from 2005-2010, and landing a recurring role in Battlestar Galctica spinoff, Caprica. He also has two movies in post production, A Bread Factory, Parts One and Two and is currently filming another due for release 2019, Abruptio.
