For all of those who love movie trivia, the inspiration behind the famous pos-credit shawarma scene from Marvel’s The Avengers will intrigue you. At last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, Avengers writer and director Joss Whedon, the creative mastermind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, discussed how the scene came about.
When a fan at the Dark Horse Comics panel “Conversations with Joss Whedon” asked Whedon what his favorite death scene was, he replied that it was that of Angel character Winifred “Fred” Burkle (portrayed by Amy Acker). The death of Fred shook Buffy and Angel fans during the final season of Angel.
Whedon discussed how the origins of the Avengers Shawarma scene came from filming the very long and emotional scene depicting Fred’s fate.
The scene itself was really exciting. I love Alexis [Denisof] and Amy [Acker]. They were just acting their hearts out. At the end of that whole day was just them in [Fred’s] bedroom as she’s getting sicker and sicker, and finally dying in his arms.
After the scene wrapped, the three went out for drinks. The lingering difficulty of the scene left them sitting together, quiet and exhausted. Sound familiar? The moment stayed with Whedon, who concluded@
