Zap2It: 8 ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Teases for Season 2’s Return

Agents of SHIELD

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns on Tuesday (March 3) and with it comes a new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big cliffhanger in Season 2’s fall finale was that Skye (Chloe Bennet) underwent a transformation into an inhuman, and the ABC series will spend the rest of Season 2 introducing audiences to that new subset of Marvel lore.

Zap2it recently visited “Agents of SHIELD’s” set with a small group of reporters, and there learned secrets of what’s coming up from the cast and producers. The Inhumans storyline is just one of many issues Agent Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) SHIELD team has to deal with, as Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) and Mack (Henry Simmons) are working a secret side mission, HYDRA is still out there and Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) is starting a new journey with Agent 33 (Ming-Na-Wen).

Here are eight teases to whet your appetite for “Agents of SHIELD’s” return:

1. The team is fractured over the Inhumans

The Inhumans might be an established concept to fans of Marvel, but none of the main characters in the show have any idea what they are. “We’re going to see a spectrum of how people approach it,” Elizabeth Henstridge says. “The thing is that this is a new thing that no one on our team has ever heard of, so there’s going to be a lot of scrambling for a bit. No one knows what to do. Because of that, Agent Coulson does have to take everybody’s opinions and every option into account. There’s going to be some interesting discussions.”

2. Adrianne Palicki knows what Bobbi and Mack’s secret is

She’s not telling, of course, but Palicki is in-the-know about Bobbi and Mack’s plan. “They kept it from me for a very long time. Every episode I’d be like, ‘What is it! I need to know for my character,'” she admits. Even though she didn’t know what Bobbi was hiding for a while, she says she “feels good” about how she played the mystery.

3. Ward has a big role to play, but you’ll have to wait to find out what it is

Sorry Ward fans, but you’re going to have to wait a little while to find out what he and Agent 33 are up to. But even though his storyline is currently separate from the midseason premiere’s main plot threats, Dalton promises “Ward has an important part in the season.”

4. Fitz and Simmons need to resolve their issues

Iain De Caestecker feels his character Fitz is stronger when he’s working with Simmons, and he wants the pair to repair their broken bridges. “I suppose what’s happened from the start of Season 2 up to midseason is they’ve become a lot stronger as individuals,” he says. “But I think they still care and need each other a lot, and they also work better together when they are together. But I think there’s a lot of things that have still be unsaid and will hopefully come out, certain confrontations that are still bubbling under.”

5. Skye and new Inhumans Lincoln have a special connection

Luke Mitchell has been cast on “Agents of SHIELD” to play an inhuman named Lincoln who is a key part of Skye’s story, and if that description immediately shouted “love interest!” to you, then you’re probably not far off. “He helps Skye adjust to her new powers in a way that makes her more comfortable with them,” Bennet explains. “And they might kind of like each other maybe at some point.” Mitchell quips back, “I wasn’t told that.”

6. The cast is impressed by Ming_na Wen’s portrayal of Agent 33

Wen wasn’t present at the set visit, but her costars sang her praises in her absence. “May is so strong and centred and dangerous, and then you have Agent 33, who has those similar qualities, but at the same time, what we see in episode 10 is someone who is a bit lost. She put a lot of work into that, even though she looks exactly the same,” Dalton says. Henstridge adds, “Ming does it so well. When you describe those two together — Agent 33 before she lost her leader — they describe as very similar characters, but you watch it and you go, there’s something very different about them and that’s not an easy thing to [do]. …It;s kind of amazing to watch her do that.”

7. You should still be using the name ‘Skye’

Though the reveal that Bennet’s character is actually the Marvel comics character Daisy Johnson was a huge part of “SHIELD’s” Season 2 midseason finale, the producers say fans should still be calling her “Skye.” “She’s still Skye, because she thinks she’s Skye,” Jed Whedon says. “I think her dad thinks she’s Daisy. And we’ll see if she ever gets to the point where she believes that that’s something that she would want to call herself. But right now, she has her own identity. Now that will change over time, but she’s definitely still Skye and everybody still sees her that way. For now.”

8. There’s bad blood between Coulson and Skye’s father

According to Clark Gregg, there’s some unfinished business between his character and Kyle MacLachlan’s Cal. “[Coulson’s] love for Skye is deep enough that it’s hard to wrap around killing her father. And at the same time, he’s not so happy with how the last fight went,” Gregg teases. “There’s a score he wants to settle, and he wants to protect her from whatever stuff he’s got going on.”
