In an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com, which was conducted in line with SAG-AFTRA union rules, Marsters and Laundau revealed what it was like reprising Spike and Dru – and why their infatuation with each other is key to the essence of the characters.

This past weekend during New York Comic Con, the world of slayers was celebrated throughout the convention and during an amazing activation set up near the convention center to celebrate the new podcast series, Slayers: A Buffyverse Audible Original Series.

“We may be talking about this scene for the rest of our lives. Would anyone likes some coffee?” James Marsters recalls telling his cast mates on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

True to his word, here we are 20 years on from the airing of the finale episode of the wildly popular fantasy series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Slayer. And we’re delving into the story of Marsters’ truly iconic character, Spike, the punk vampire who writers tried – and ultimately failed – to stop audiences falling hopelessly in love with.

Since Disney acquired Fox in 2019 they’ve been working to breathe some life into the Buffy the Vampire Slayer with new canon material. Instead of jumping into movie or television mediums, they’re currently sticking with books ad the first two youth novels are out now. In January we picked up on the current timeline following a new vampire slayer, Frankie, and now, we’re heading way back to the 1900s to follow Spike, his girlfriend (and sire) Drusilla and Darla the vampire who brought them all together.

Buffy star Lenk said about the slayers single status: “Amen, sister. I think years ago I would have been like, ‘She should have ended up with Spike.’

“But honestly, to quote that meme or tweet or whatever, ‘Honestly, you choose men in this day and age in this economy? You want to end up with a man? No thank you. Aren’t we over men?’

While Buffy Summers will always be synonymous with the words “vampire slayer,” she isn’t the only iconic character that those words bring to mind. The likes of Willow Rosenberg, Angel, and Spike have all become fast fan favorites during their respective times in the spotlight, and the latter of those three has just returned to it once again. But, like so many other things in the world of The Vampire Slayer, this version of Spike is both strikingly similar and eerily different from the one fans know best. And, as of now, there is no telling what he has in store for the mostly unsuspecting Scooby Gang.
